Hey, we're taking a short break. We will be back soon!

How on earth did I become a StoryAthlete?

One of the most frequent questions I receive is how did I end up as a StoryAthlete.

Let me take you back to high school…just kidding, kind of.

I actually found StoryAthlete and GRIT through an old high school classmate of mine, who I also used to work with at Sports Authority (TSA people, where you at?) when we were in our late teens. We hadn’t spoken in well over 15 years when I decided to take a jump into the StoryAthlete world.

Who is the mystery classmate? None other than GRIT’s certified head trainer, CJ Thomas.

Somehow after losing touch in our teens, CJ and I connected on Facebook. Over the course of the last year or so I started seeing him writing these amazing stories on his Facebook page. I could tell through these stories that there was a marked change happening in him. His confidence was growing. His convictions about who he is and what he’s contributing to the world were becoming clear and strong.

I wanted some of that magic, so after over a decade of not talking, I sent him a random message. “Hey, remember me? If not, that’s cool too…so….can you tell me about this StoryAthlete thing you do?”

I’m still awkward as heck y’all, so don’t think those first exchanges weren’t the same old Heather you’ve grown to know and love.

CJ indulged my painful awkwardness and let me know that there was a new story writing challenge starting soon if I wanted in. I definitely wanted in.

You see, my lesser self, I call her Lesser Heather, had been keeping my Heroic self locked in a prison for years, and I knew it was time to write myself a new story. Heroic Heather was ready to hold the pen again.

I don’t know why, I honestly can’t explain it, but I knew StoryAthlete was the vehicle to help me release those lesser self shackles. I had a gut feeling this is where I was supposed to be, and I trusted it, even though I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

I’m so glad I trusted my gut!

Almost 5 months later I have the pleasure of being a part of the weirdest little internet world, full of the most kindhearted badasses you’ve ever met.

I couldn’t be more grateful for CJ for sharing his story and being the light for me to find my home inside StoryAthlete. He’s the ultimate kindhearted badass 💪.
